Surrounded by Enemies, but the Lord is my Refuge.
Psalm 71, written by David, shows his great trust in the Lord, a confidence that He will always be with him, and that He is greater than any trouble.
David was well accustomed to having enemies. In his most famous encounter, he faced Goliath. When others would have trusted in superior weapons, David trusted in the Lord.
Be Not Scornful
Being involved in civil liberties politics can bring to oneself a cynical, even judgemental attitude. Many commentators are so dismayed by the erosion to basic liberties that there is a suspicion, whether voiced or not, that everything the government does is sinister.
I am as much prone to this as anyone else, yet the Lord gives guidance to us in His Word.
Honour and Obey
A dear brother of mine, as we were speaking, remarked on an interesting seeming contradiction in Christians being involved in civil liberties campaigning, in that we, as Christians, are in a dictatorship. Plato once remarked that the most preferable and effective form of governance was a benign dictatorship. And as dearly beloved children of God, we voluntarily put ourselves under His supreme authority, to be His bondservants. Slaves, if you will.Tested By Fire!
The blessing of Trial.
One thing you can be sure about: things go wrong. That is true for everyone, regardless of faith, position or culture.
Yet as Christians we have two distinct differences from other people.
Firstly, more will go wrong. “What? Surely as believers we can expect God to bless us!” I hear the cries.
Fear Not, Fear God Series
Fear is a very natural emotion, and has a great impact on our lives. Non-Christians talk of “overcoming their fears”, and as Christians we too can experience fear and respond to it either by being crippled by it or overcoming it.
Scripture speaks a great deal about fear, its results and, most importantly for a believer, it gives a good guide of how to deal with fear.
